About
Joe maintains the Shake True Blog on behalf of Shaker. He has worked for Shaker in a teaching capacity since 2000. You can usually find him playing pick-up ball at Shelldale on weeknights in the summer.
Shake True Hoops was established in 1990 by former Guelph Gryphon and European pro-player Steve “Shaker” Cuevas. Over the years more than 400 athletes have been to one-on-one skills sessions with Shaker. A significant proportion of these clients have had interest from Canadian universities and U.S. colleges. A few have enjoyed pro-careers in Europe and Australia.
While Shake True Hoops may be about improving one’s basketball skills, it is also interested in the overall development of the individual. Shake True Hoops will endeavor to broaden the scope through which each player operates. An appreciation for arts and culture is not likely to lead one to a path of destruction, so we embrace the arts and practice an attitude of acceptance and learning. Vigilance to small details and seeing tasks through to completion also fall into the category of positive habits that Shake True Hoops would recommend and advise in and out of sessions. Respect and courtesy are staples of Shake True Hoops sessions as both lead to a greater appreciation for our surroundings and so for ourselves. Compassion is yet another issue addressed at Shake True Hoops sessions. Without compassion for those less fortunate it is difficult to understand sacrifice and that is the most important rule to achievement. One must sacrifice time, joy and the propensity for procrastination in order to truly succeed.
STH provides a comprehensive program encompassing physical skills, nutrition, and the mental approach to the game which are all important to the player and his/ her overall development. Shaker brings a lifetime of experience as a player and coach to provide each player the opportunity to become the best baller he/she can be. Regardless of the level each player can have skills developed and refined to bring them to the next level. The investment of time and effort with personal and team instruction will benefit any player. The list of former student/ athletes who have been involved in the program and who have gone on to great success is a testament to them and STH.
